Dino Beganovic continued his impressive form with a commanding victory in the Formula 2 sprint race in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Sunday (6/10). The Ferrari junior took his second consecutive win after triumphing in Madrid last week.
Starting from second on the grid, Beganovic initially chased polesitter Nikola Tsolov before making his move on lap five, sweeping past the Bulgarian on the main straight and immediately building a gap. A late safety car threatened to undo his hard work, but the DAMS driver managed the restart perfectly to secure the win.
Laurens van Hoepen of Trident finished second, capitalising on a moment of oversteer from Tsolov at the exit of Turn 10 on lap 10. The Dutchman had initially dropped to third but fought back to take the runner-up spot and held on to the finish.
Rodin Motorsport's Alex Dunne and Martinius Stenshorne put on a stunning charge from the fifth row. Dunne pulled off a brilliant double overtake on Kush Maini and Noel Leon on lap seven, then quickly dispatched Prema's Sebastian Montoya after a brief safety car. A mistake from Rafael Camara allowed him through to fourth. Stenshorne followed his teammate's example, passing Montoya and Tsolov on lap 16 to claim fifth.
Tsolov, who reported rear tyre issues on the radio, had to relinquish third to Dunne. The Campos Racing driver finished fifth and maintains his championship lead by 11 points. Dunne's podium moves him to fourth, 35 points adrift of the Bulgarian but with two front-row starts for the feature races.
It was a race to forget for Rafael Camara. The Invicta Racing driver made contact with Prema's Mari Boya at Turn 2 on the opening lap, ending the Spaniard's race and earning a 10-second penalty. Just as he began to build a gap, the safety car erased any hopes of points. Invicta brought him in to serve the penalty, fitting supersoft tyres, but a Turn 1 collision between Ritomo Miyata and Leon left Camara with nowhere to go.
A chaotic restart in the pack, as MP Motorsport's Oliver Goethe locked up into Turn 1 and collected teammate Gabriele Mini, allowed Colton Herta to claim ninth from 21st on the grid. Formula 3 graduate Hiyu Yamakoshi survived an off-track moment at Turn 1 to finish 17th on his F2 debut with Van Amersfoort Racing.
With this result, Beganovic further cements his reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in F2. His Baku win signals his readiness to challenge at the front. Meanwhile, Tsolov remains at the top, but the pressure from rivals like Dunne and Beganovic will only intensify in the remaining rounds.
