This year’s Great Race promises to be a must-watch affair with a new manufacturer in the mix and just six unchanged driver line-ups taking on the unforgiving mountain at the Bathurst 1000. Of those six, only three of them are in familiar equipment after the brand moves by Triple Eight to Ford and Walkinshaw TWG Racing alongside Brad Jones Racing to Toyota.

The aforementioned trio consists of Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood at Dick Johnson Racing Ford, Aaron Cameron and Zak Best at Blanchard Racing Team Ford, and Cameron Waters with Mark Winterbottom at Tickford Racing Ford. Will continuity be the key to success? History suggests it does not matter too much on the daunting circuit.

Kostecki and Hazelwood won it together as a new pairing at Erebus Motorsport in 2024, and the year before that Shane van Gisbergen and Richie Stanaway achieved the same feat at Triple Eight. Since 2016, new driver pairings have won five times in their first attempt together – including Will Davison and Jonathon Webb in 2016, David Reynolds and Luke Younden in 2017, and Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth in 2021.

There will be a lot of interest in Matt Payne and his new co-driver Will Davison, who is the most high-profile Supercars star to step out of full-time driving and into the co-driver’s seat. They were only sixth in The Bend 500, which was punctuated by wild weather. Similar conditions blew last year’s Bathurst 1000 wide open and thrust Payne and his team into the picture late in the race, placing them among the early favourites.

Before The Bend 500, questions lingered over whether Toyota’s five-car fleet would even finish the 500km enduro. They dispelled any doubts with an emphatic win for Chaz Mostert and Fabian Coulthard, while Walkinshaw TWG stablemates Ryan Wood and Jaxon Evans claimed third. Based on those performances, Walkinshaw TWG Racing enters the weekend as a firm contender for victory.
