Baku City Circuit is under the spotlight again. The longest street circuit on the Formula 1 calendar offers a unique challenge for the 2026 power units: a 2.2 km straight that can drain the battery in an instant. Yet, behind the threat of superclipping lies the potential for a far more dynamic race than Madrid.

High Energy Consumption, But Braking is the Savior

With a lap length of 6 km, Baku is not exactly friendly to energy management. The long straights, especially the final sector, force drivers to keep the throttle pinned. Though not as extreme as Spa or Monza, energy consumption in Baku remains high. Teams must carefully decide where to deploy the extra electrical power.

The good news is that Baku has many slow corners that provide long braking phases. Brembo simulations record ten braking points, five of which generate over 3g of deceleration. This means abundant kinetic energy can be regenerated. The battery won't need to draw power from the internal combustion engine to recharge, thus minimizing time loss.

Superclipping Still Unavoidable

However, it's not all smooth sailing. The control electronics will still progressively shut off the electric motor to spread energy across the straights. Clipping phases are inevitable. This makes energy management crucial, especially in qualifying where every fraction of a second counts.

Potential for More Dynamic Racing

Amid the difficulties, there's a silver lining. Circuits that challenge energy management often force teams to devise different strategies for using electrical power per lap. These strategic differences create speed differentials between cars, opening up opportunities for easier overtaking. Monza is a prime example: a track that was once difficult to pass on has now become a haven for drivers looking to gain positions.

If a similar pattern repeats in Baku, we could witness intense battles throughout the race. Top teams like Red Bull Racing and Ferrari must be extremely savvy in managing energy distribution. Drivers also need to be smarter in choosing when to attack.

Grid Penalties as an Option

Interestingly, Baku could be an ideal venue for teams looking to serve grid penalties. With a track layout that allows overtaking, starting from the back is not a death sentence. Some teams might take this opportunity to change power unit components outside their allocation without losing too many points.

So, even though the battery will be pushed to its limits, the 2026 Azerbaijan GP promises an adrenaline-pumping spectacle. Whoever manages energy best will have the greatest chance of standing on the podium.
