Queensland Raceway is set to host a thrilling season finale of the AU4 Championship this weekend. The Ipswich circuit was chosen after Sydney Motorsport Park withdrew due to financial reasons, adding another layer of drama to an already intense title fight.
AU4 series promoter and AGI Sport team principal Adam Gotch expressed his disappointment over the Sydney cancellation. "We organised for the final round to be at Sydney Motorsport Park," he told Speedcafe. "Unfortunately, the circuit deemed it wasn't financially viable, nothing to do with us, but just the lack of support categories at the back end of the year." Nevertheless, Gotch praised the upgraded facilities at Queensland Raceway and hinted at a possible return in 2027.
In the Gen1 class for older-spec Mygale M14-F4 chassis, Jackson Culver leads the standings by a single point over Koby Wilson. Lewis Gotch, who led before Round 4 at The Bend, slipped to third, just 13 points adrift. This close battle promises an exciting showdown on track.
Meanwhile, the Gen2 class for the newer Tatuus F4-T421 chassis features a two-way fight between reigning New Zealand Formula Ford champion Marco Manson and young gun Jensen Marold. Manson holds a six-point advantage. "Both drivers, Jensen Marold and Marco Manson, have just been swapping the lead in the championship round after round," Gotch added. "It's been a very interesting and close battle. They go into it with only a few points separating each other and it's going to be whoever beats the other is going to take the title."
The top two have taken three wins apiece across the previous two rounds, showcasing remarkably even pace. Manson enters the event on a high after recently testing British F4 machinery with Rodin Motorsport in the UK, an experience that could tip the scales in his favour.
Gotch, who has worked with high-level talents like Juan-Pablo Montoya, Ralf Schumacher, Mark Webber, and Nico Rosberg, rates Marold and Manson among the best. "This year's pick of the bunch is obviously Jensen Marold and Marco Manson," he said. "They're your top two and either one of those guys could go and definitely be top 10 in the premier Formula 4 championships in Europe, if not top 5." This speaks volumes about the quality of AU4's grid.
With two championships still up for grabs, the AU4 finale at Queensland Raceway is a must-watch for junior racing fans. Will Culver hold on to his slender lead? Can Wilson or Gotch snatch the title? And who will emerge victorious in Gen2? All will be decided this weekend.
