Aston Martin Unveils Theory Behind Breakthrough Sepang F1 Result
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Fernando Alonso scored Aston Martin’s best finish of the season in Malaysia

When the pit lane lights went green and the Aston Martin garage prepared for a daunting weekend, few expected the Silverstone-based squad to secure their best result of the Formula 1 season so far. Taking place at the Sepang Circuit, a race heavily disrupted by rain-related chaos and a Safety Car period provided the perfect stage for Fernando Alonso to clinch a crucial eighth-place finish.

The current campaign has certainly been far from a smooth ride for the green outfit. They are still undergoing a steady recovery from a disastrous start to the year, a situation partly caused by their underdeveloped AMR26 chassis and an underpowered Honda power unit that has struggled to match the front-running pace.

Yet, amidst these persistent limitations, Fernando Alonso's trademark race craft behind the wheel proved to be the decisive factor. The recently-retained Spanish veteran expertly fended off pressure from Lando Norris to the chequered flag, fully capitalizing on wet weather variables and track drama to salvage vital championship points.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix, Aston Martin trackside chief Mike Krack shed light on the technical analysis behind their unexpected competitiveness in Malaysia. According to Motorsport Week, Krack pointed to Sepang's unique track surface as a key element that inadvertently played into the hands of their package's specific traits.

"We have obviously looked into it and we know the strengths and the weaknesses of our package," Mike Krack said. "I think what could have happened is the track was really an outlier in terms of surface. The surface roughness was very high. With that, the grip is low and the time where your grip is limited is increasing, and you move everything to lower speed, the car is quite strong in these sections, so I think this helped us in terms of competitivity. I think also maybe other manufacturers had some issues. I think it’s a combination of both."

Meanwhile, his Honda counterpart also offered valuable insights into how the power unit's unique behavior under wet conditions has provided crucial data for the team's preparations at the Marina Bay Circuit.
