Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Aston Martin has dismissed speculation that a handshake between Lawrence Stroll and Koji Watanabe on the grid at the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix represented a “peace” gesture amid internal tensions.

The moment occurred prior to the start of the race at Honda’s home event, where the two project leaders were seen shaking hands and posing for photographs. The image quickly drew attention given Aston Martin’s difficult start to the season.

However, Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack clarified that the interaction was not related to resolving any conflict, emphasizing that the partnership between Aston Martin and Honda remains stable.

“There was no need to make peace, because we have a good relationship.”

“We came here knowing it was the home race of our partner. We have a lot of respect for Honda and we have seen how much work has gone into addressing the issues we are facing.”

Krack explained that the gesture reflected mutual respect rather than any attempt to signal reconciliation, particularly in the context of ongoing technical challenges faced by the team.

“It was also a matter of respect for us to try everything we can to finish the race. We discussed that before and will continue to do so going forward.”

Aston Martin has endured a challenging opening phase to the 2026 season, with its car struggling for both performance and reliability. These issues were evident in Japan, where both cars started from the back of the grid.

Lance Stroll was forced to retire due to a technical problem, while Fernando Alonso managed to reach the chequered flag. It marked the first time this season that an Aston Martin car completed a race.

With performance pressures mounting, the collaboration between Aston Martin and Honda remains a critical factor in addressing technical limitations. Attention now turns to upcoming rounds, where improvements in reliability and competitiveness will be essential to reset the trajectory of Aston Martin’s 2026 campaign.
