Aston Martin Backs Alonso for 2027 Dakar Rally Assault

Intense speculation surrounding Fernando Alonso's future has finally cleared up as the Formula 1 world champion secures a major deal to contest the grueling Dakar Rally. According to Autosport, the agreement was reached as far back as August, ensuring not only his continued presence in F1 with Aston Martin through 2027 but also full manufacturer backing for his upcoming cross-country raid campaign.

The agreement was recently leaked through Spanish media after Fernando Alonso dropped heavy hints over the weekend regarding surprising announcements on the horizon. While many paddock observers initially suspected a potential GT racing collaboration with Max Verstappen, the two-time world champion is instead heading back to the desert sands, returning to an event where he previously finished 13th overall with Toyota back in 2020.

This bold multidisciplinary pursuit mirrors Fernando Alonso's famous hiatus years during which he tackled the Indianapolis 500 and claimed consecutive outright victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours with Toyota, experiences he credits with shaping him into a much more rounded racing driver.

"Yes, exactly, I had to stop. I had to switch off from Formula 1," Fernando Alonso said of those defining experiences. "I had to experience different formulas and different series, and learn from the specialists in those series and become a more complete driver. That was very important for me and I still find those challenges appealing. I don't know when I will do it, but I will repeat those experiences.">
