There comes a point when superlatives fail for Marc Marquez. After May's Italian Grand Prix, he was 102 points adrift of the championship lead. A nerve injury forced surgery, and he nearly wrote himself out of title contention. But since returning, he's won five grands prix, four with 37-point weekends, and now stands level with Jorge Martin on 274 points at the top of the standings.
In the seven races after the Italian GP, out of 259 points available, Marquez scored 203. Martin managed only 118, while Marco Bezzecchi took 68. Meanwhile, Aprilia's RS-GP holds a clear performance advantage over Ducati. The crucial factor: Marquez's right shoulder, according to his surgeon, is operating at just 50% capacity. This makes his achievements remarkable and highlights Aprilia's weakness that no engineering can fix.
After the Aragon GP, Marquez posted a viral image of his damaged right arm, the result of years of crashes. "What happened after Aragon helps me to just concentrate and be relaxed, and to be open to everybody that I will try to give my best with what I have," he said at Misano. The post, he says, set him "free" and became a psychological weapon. By showing his physical limitations, he created a narrative where rivals must win, while he only needs to survive. The pressure shifts to Aprilia and its riders.
Aprilia has done a fantastic job developing the RS-GP into the best bike on the grid. However, their main weakness isn't the machine but rider consistency. Bezzecchi suffered four consecutive Sunday non-scores before the summer break, derailing his title chances. Martin has had ups and downs, with his Misano race ruined by arm pump. Meanwhile, Marquez, despite his physical limitations, has been nearly flawless.
Marquez's victory at Misano, a circuit historically kinder to Aprilia, proves that Aprilia's weakness is not bike performance but the ability to consistently deliver under pressure. Marquez and Ducati capitalised when Aprilia faltered. If Aprilia wants to win the title, they must find a solution to their riders' inconsistency, as this weakness cannot be overcome by technical upgrades alone.
With eight races remaining, the title fight is still open. But one thing is certain: the weakness exposed at Misano is one Aprilia cannot fix quickly. Meanwhile, Marquez continues to race with a shoulder at 50% and only grows stronger. This is a real threat to Aprilia's dominance for the rest of the season.
