Antonelli Tops Dutch GP Practice, Verstappen Struggles

Kimi Antonelli kicked off the second half of Formula 1’s 2026 season in style, beating Lando Norris’s McLaren to the top spot in the sole practice session at the Dutch Grand Prix.

The championship leader delivered a 1m12.949s lap in the dying moments at Zandvoort, his second flying lap on soft tyres after being baulked by traffic on his first. Earlier, he had a harmless spin at Turn 10 but quickly resumed.

Norris also improved on his second run to end up 0.121s adrift, with George Russell third, just 0.125s off his Mercedes team-mate. The silver arrows looked strong on the high-downforce circuit, setting up an intriguing battle for qualifying.

Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were fourth and fifth, both within three tenths of the pace, while Oscar Piastri’s McLaren was sixth, 0.659s behind Antonelli.

Nico Hulkenberg led the midfield in seventh for Audi on medium tyres, ahead of Pierre Gasly, who has Alpine’s major upgrade (Franco Colapinto will get it at Monza), and Hulkenberg’s team-mate Gabriel Bortoleto. Arvid Lindblad took 10th for Racing Bulls, just ahead of Max Verstappen, fresh from recommitting to Red Bull.

It was a tricky session for Red Bull, with Verstappen struggling with understeer and Liam Lawson trying to get to grips with the RB22 he only learned he’d drive earlier this week. Lawson ended up 14th, around six tenths off Verstappen, after a moment at the Turn 11/12 chicane on his final lap. Carlos Sainz also had a tough time, finishing 22nd for Williams after several off-track excursions.

Elsewhere, the new Honda engine upgrade racked up solid mileage (49 laps) and powered Fernando Alonso to 12th, 1.5s off the pace. Yuki Tsunoda completed his first F1 session for Racing Bulls, finishing 17th, eight months after losing his Red Bull seat.
