Kimi Antonelli sacrificed his own qualifying session at his home race to help George Russell secure a front-row start. Now, he expects the favour to be returned as the season reaches its climax.
Starting from the back of the grid due to a penalty, Antonelli switched his focus to being Russell's wingman in Q3, offering a slipstream on the main straight that helped his team-mate lock in second place.
The Payback Dilemma in a Title Fight
Antonelli is fully aware that Russell is his closest rival in the championship battle. Yet, he put team interests above personal ambition, a move that has earned widespread praise in the paddock.
"Obviously it's a very weird feeling," said Antonelli. "I had to do my job, which was to help George. I tried my best in order to help as much as possible."
For Antonelli, the qualifying result was meaningless anyway, as he faced a back-of-the-grid start. The engine penalty forced him into a difficult race, but he showed remarkable professionalism throughout.
Team Strategy Under Pressure
Mercedes' decision to install new engine components in Antonelli's car at a track known for overtaking opportunities was a strategic masterstroke. It expands his pool of available power unit components for the rest of the season.
Team bosses have made it clear that Russell and Antonelli must prioritize team interests above all else. This includes accepting team orders when necessary, as Russell did two weeks ago at Zandvoort.
