George Russell dominated qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, securing pole position, while his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli suffered a painful exit in Q1. The session at the Baku City Circuit on Friday delivered a stark contrast for the Silver Arrows.
Russell, who felt "hooked up" with his car from the start, was untouchable. He set the fastest time with a margin of 0.837 seconds over his closest rival. "The car felt strong from the beginning," said Russell. "But pole is just the first step; we need to finish the job tomorrow."
On the other side of the garage, Kimi Antonelli met a cruel fate. He clipped the wall at Turn 1 during Q1, damaging his front wing and forcing him into the pits. "I had more headwind compared to the previous lap, so the front was stronger, and I turned in at the same spot, but the car turned more and I hit the wall," Antonelli explained. As a result, he could only manage 16th place and will start from the eighth row.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen was also in the spotlight after failing to deliver his best performance. The Red Bull driver complained of engine and battery issues that cost him up to half a second. "I lost a lot of time on the straights," said Verstappen. He also caught a yellow flag on his final attempt, leaving him eighth on the grid. It was a heavy blow for the reigning champion, who had shown promise in FP3.
Amid the struggles of the stars, Isack Hadjar impressed with fourth place. The young driver was just 0.141 seconds off the front row. "Nothing outstanding," he said modestly. "But it's a good time to remind everyone that I'm still here." Hadjar, who recently returned from injury, proved he still has the speed required at the highest level.
Qualifying in Baku is always full of surprises. The narrow and demanding street circuit turns every mistake into a disaster. Russell capitalized perfectly, while Antonelli and Verstappen had to swallow bitter pills. Tomorrow's race will test the drivers' ability to bounce back from difficult positions.
With this result, the drivers' championship battle becomes even more intriguing. Antonelli still leads with 81 points, but Russell, now on pole, could close the gap if he wins the race. Verstappen remains in contention, though he will have to work extra hard from his unfavorable starting position.
