Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers' Championship after winning a dramatic Canadian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver capitalised on the retirement of team-mate and title rival George Russell to extend his championship advantage to 43 points.
The race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was initially defined by an intense Mercedes battle. Russell and Antonelli exchanged the lead multiple times during the opening 30 laps, creating one of the most entertaining contests of the season. However, the fight ended abruptly when Russell suffered a power unit failure while leading the race.
Russell admitted he was "lost for words" after the retirement. The British driver had enjoyed an almost flawless weekend, claiming Sprint pole, Sprint victory and Grand Prix pole position, only to see his hopes of victory disappear due to a technical issue.

Antonelli later described Russell's retirement as a "shame", acknowledging that their duel had the potential to become one of the standout battles of the season. Nevertheless, the Italian seized the opportunity to secure his fourth consecutive grand prix victory.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton enjoyed his strongest weekend since joining Ferrari. Starting fifth on the grid, the seven-time world champion climbed to second place after overtaking Max Verstappen during the closing stages of the race.
Despite the podium finish, Hamilton stressed that Ferrari cannot afford to relax. He pointed to Mercedes' recent upgrade package and insisted Ferrari must continue developing aggressively if it hopes to challenge consistently for victories and championships.
Verstappen also left Montreal with reasons for optimism. His third-place finish delivered the first podium of the season for Red Bull Racing since becoming a full Formula 1 power unit manufacturer, marking a significant milestone in the team's development programme.
The Dutch driver described the result as "extremely positive" after a difficult start to the campaign. While Red Bull remains behind Mercedes in outright pace, Verstappen believes the podium demonstrates that the team's development direction is beginning to deliver tangible progress.
With Antonelli continuing to build a substantial championship advantage, pressure is now mounting on Russell, Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull to respond. The Canadian Grand Prix not only produced a race winner but also significantly reshaped the dynamics of the 2026 Formula 1 title battle.
