Andrea Kimi Antonelli has just etched his name into the history books at the Italian Grand Prix. Starting from 19th on the grid, the young Bologna-born driver delivered a stunning performance to finish first in front of his home crowd. This victory also ends a long drought: since 1966, no Italian driver had managed to win the home race at Monza.
Speaking to Sky Sport F1, Antonelli was still struggling to come to terms with what he had just achieved. “I never thought I would be here today. It's insane. I'm still trying to process what just happened,” he said, his eyes sparkling.
The most emotional moment for him came during the race restart. “After the second start, when I saw I was at the front, I told myself: 'this is one I have to win today, this is one I have to win'. And I'm really happy because it was a fantastic day. The support from the fans today was incredible,” Antonelli added.
Many expected the Monza crowd to be divided between Ferrari supporters and Antonelli fans. However, the grandstands united behind the young driver—perhaps also due to the disappointing performance of the home team. Antonelli managed to do something far from easy: getting the 'red' crowd to cheer for a Mercedes victory at the Italian GP.
“During the race, when I came out of the first chicane, I looked at the grandstand on the right and they were all pumped up. There was incredible energy. So I have to thank all the fans because today they gave me that extra push,” he explained.
This victory is not just about lap times, but also a symbol of the resurgence of Italian racing spirit. Andrea Kimi Antonelli has proven he is a force to be reckoned with on the biggest stage. With full support from Mercedes, his future in Formula 1 looks brighter than ever.
