Andrea Stella Praises Lando Norris' Redemption at 2026 Singapore GP
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Piastri suffered a mid-race puncture at Marina Bay ruining his strategy

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella has expressed his satisfaction after Lando Norris extended a helping hand to team-mate Oscar Piastri during the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. This proactive attitude served as a crucial redemption following a chaotic Sprint race collision between the two teammates.

Earlier in the weekend, Stella did not hide his frustration, labeling the race-ending contact on the final lap of the Sprint as completely unacceptable. The ambitious passing attempt saw both McLaren cars spin out of points contention, prompting stern internal talks within the Woking-based outfit regarding on-track discipline.

However, the atmosphere shifted positively during Sunday's main grand prix. Seeing the reigning world champion actively look out for his teammate's race left the former Ferrari engineer thoroughly pleased with the sudden shift in mindset and team-first approach.

"While the conversations from this point of view are not concluded, there’s more we can do to become a more united and even stronger team," Stella told media including Motorsport Week. "I’m pleased that Lando, at some stage in the race, adopted this way of thinking."

The Italian boss emphasized that such collective responsibility is a mandatory requirement for anyone racing under the papaya colors, especially considering the relentless efforts put in by the factory personnel behind the scenes.

"This is what I expect as a team principal. This is what the 1,000 people that work at McLaren expect from our drivers. So, it’s good that we have had this example and I expect definitely more of that in the future, independently of the fact that they will be heard on the radio or they will happen behind the closed door," he added.

Reflecting on the Sprint drama, Norris admitted that while he initially felt he had the right of way, hindsight proved that the move was overly optimistic, prompting a sincere apology to the team. During Sunday's race, his willingness to assist Piastri's recovery drive showcased maturity as McLaren secured valuable championship points.
