Alvaro Carpe topped the timesheets during Friday's Moto3 Practice session at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit ahead of the Australian Grand Prix. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider delivered a stellar performance in ideal weather conditions to edge out the competition.
Throughout the 35-minute afternoon session, lightweight class contenders pushed hard to secure a direct passage into Q2. Early pacesetters included David Almansa and Maximo Quiles, while local favorite Joel Kelso immediately found strong rhythm following a promising opening free practice earlier in the day.
Almansa held the top spot for a significant portion of the session, closely pursued by Quiles, Carpe, and David Munoz. Quiles particularly caught the eye with a long run showcasing impressive consistency and rapid lap times.
As the session entered its frantic final minutes, riders bolted on fresh rubber for a final time-attack simulation. Kelso briefly seized control in front of his home crowd with a 1'35.318 lap, but Carpe delivered a counter-punch right at the death, clocking a 1'35.292 to pip the local hero by just 0.026 seconds.
The action-packed session also witnessed an incident involving Valentin Perrone and Australian wildcard Marianos Nikolis, which drew the attention of Race Direction. Ultimately, fourteen riders secured automatic Q2 berths, leaving Eddie O'Shea stranded in fifteenth place just outside the cutoff.
