Amidst a challenging 2026 WorldSBK campaign, Alvaro Bautista came agonizingly close to securing his first podium since February during the second main race at Estoril, Portugal. Despite boasting a legendary career decorated with two titles, 129 podiums, and 63 victories, the seasoned veteran faced yet another heartbreak after a late crash erased his hard-fought redemption drive.
Following his departure from the factory Ducati seat—which went to Iker Lecuona after the 2025 season—Bautista found a new home with the top independent outfit Barni Spark Racing Team. A strong third-place finish at Phillip Island offered early promise, but a dry spell followed, with three fourth-place finishes at Assen in April serving as his closest brushes with success prior to the Portuguese round.
Estoril offered genuine signs of a turnaround over the weekend. After struggling to 12th in qualifying, the 41-year-old Spaniard fought through the field to finish ninth and fifth before mounting a serious charge for the final podium step in the final main encounter.

"That wasn't even a real mistake," Bautista explained regarding his late-race crash. "I didn't feel like I was on the limit; in previous laps, it felt much more like that. It is a pity, I showed that the speed was there. We fought and never gave up—this season is very hard for us. Everyone only sees the results, but we've really had a lot of problems throughout the year."
The internal garage dynamic highlights an even starker contrast against his 15-year-younger teammate, Yari Montella, who has claimed 14 podiums this season and stands on the verge of securing WorldSBK bronze ahead of Jerez with a 53-point cushion over Alex Lowes. Meanwhile, Bautista sits tenth overall with less than half of his teammate's total points.
