Flavio Briatore, Alpine's de facto Team Principal, has lashed out at an FIA judge he claims was biased after the team lost its 2026 Monaco Grand Prix podium. The FIA International Court of Appeal (ICA) overturned the decision to reinstate Pierre Gasly to third place, prompting Briatore to question the judge's independence.
Gasly had finished third in Monaco but was penalized for exceeding the pitlane speed limit, dropping him down the order. Alpine successfully appealed, but McLaren and Red Bull, who were also affected, took the case to the ICA, which ruled in their favor, stripping Gasly of the podium again.
The decision left Alpine frustrated, with the team issuing a statement expressing its disappointment. Briatore then revealed suspicions about one of the judges, Filippo Marchino, alleging a close connection to McLaren.
"I think it's very unfair, first of all, but we accept the decision," Briatore said. "What is very strange was the fourth judge in the panel, and one of the judges acted like a prosecutor. The problem is, he's very linked with the McLaren company. We have a nice picture of this guy at the speech for the McLaren in 2018 in MSO Beverly Hills."
Briatore further noted that the judge founded the One Drop Foundation, which McLaren supported by donating several cars. He argued this constituted a clear conflict of interest, and the judge should have recused himself from the panel.
This case highlights the importance of judicial independence in motorsport. If Briatore's allegations hold weight, it could set a concerning precedent for the FIA's credibility. However, no concrete evidence has emerged yet to suggest the ICA's decision was influenced by personal ties.
Alpine is now considering its next steps, with Briatore hinting at possible legal action. "We will see what we do next," he asserted. The situation has become a major talking point in the paddock and could strain relationships between teams.
