Alpine will consider disciplinary action against its driver Franco Colapinto following a multi-car crash in the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The incident occurred during a restart after a safety car period, when Colapinto locked up and collided with several drivers, including teammate Pierre Gasly and world champion Lando Norris.
The crash unfolded as Colapinto locked his front tires entering Turn 1 after the safety car pulled in. He lost control and hit Gasly and Norris, destroying their races. Colapinto himself could not continue, while Gasly and Norris were also eliminated. As a result, the stewards handed Colapinto a 10-second penalty, converted into a five-place grid drop for the next race since he did not finish.
Norris was highly critical of Colapinto's move, calling for a race ban. However, other drivers disagreed. George Russell, Max Verstappen, and Isack Hadjar all felt a ban would be too harsh for what they saw as an unintentional error. "It was a small error with big consequences," Russell said. "Personally, I think race bans should come from intentional dangerous actions."
Colapinto has accepted responsibility. "I made a big mistake. I was out of control after braking," he admitted. He also apologized to Norris and McLaren. Nevertheless, Alpine's executive advisor Flavio Briatore expressed deep disappointment. "I want to take time to reflect and consider what course of action should be taken, so we can learn and avoid such a situation in the future," Briatore said.
Briatore also highlighted the impact on Alpine's constructors' championship fight. At the time, Colapinto and Gasly were running ninth and tenth, which would have cut the gap to Racing Bulls to just six points. Instead, the crash opened the door for Racing Bulls to score unexpected points through Arvid Lindblad, who finished seventh despite colliding with teammate Liam Lawson at the same restart but avoiding a penalty. Alpine now trails Racing Bulls by 15 points in the battle for fifth.
"Obviously I'm extremely disappointed with the outcome of today's race, knowing we lost valuable points in the championship fight," Briatore added. "These sort of incidents shouldn't happen, particularly when we were running well with both cars in point-scoring positions. I feel very sorry for the team and for Pierre who did a great job all weekend."
Alpine has yet to decide on the form of any sanction. Options range from an internal warning to benching Colapinto for a race. Briatore is understood to be very unhappy with the error given its impact on the team's championship position. A final decision is expected soon.
