Alonso: No Timeframe Yet for F1 Future Decision

Fernando Alonso has confirmed there is no deadline for announcing his Formula 1 future, as he awaits talks with Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll and technical director Adrian Newey.

The 45-year-old's contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of 2026, fueling speculation about retirement or a move. Earlier, Alonso hinted at deciding "around summer time," but with F1 returning from its August break at the Dutch Grand Prix, no announcement has been made.

Asked at Zandvoort for a new timeline, the Spaniard shrugged: "I don't have any. I just came from holiday, so I'll see in the next days, weeks, or months. I know Lawrence is coming this weekend, so maybe we'll have lunch or coffee, or perhaps at Monza. I also need to go to the factory soon for Madrid simulator work, so if Lawrence or Adrian are around, I'll sit with them. So maybe in the next weeks."

Aston Martin's competitiveness has been a concern, with just one point scored so far in 2026. However, a major chassis upgrade in Budapest brought improvement, and Zandvoort marks the debut of Honda's updated engine. Alonso insists these upgrades are not decisive for his future.

"I hope we see some benefit in terms of power and drivability, but for me, it's more important to see that our development philosophy is correct, like in Budapest. We knew we wouldn't fight for top positions, but we wanted to confirm the chassis direction was right, and I think we did," Alonso explained.

"The correlation between what we expected and what we delivered was good. Now with the engine, it's the same thing. The numbers don't matter—we're too far behind to care about a tenth of a second. We just want to see that what we planned works as expected," he added.

If Alonso opts not to renew, he could still stay at Aston Martin in another role. For now, his decision remains open, adding another layer of intrigue to the remainder of the 2026 season.
