Fernando Alonso once again proved his class at the Dutch Grand Prix. Starting from 18th on the grid, the Aston Martin driver finished ninth, earning high praise from fans who called him the GOAT (Greatest of All Time).
The 2026 season has not been easy for Alonso. He retired four times in the first half of the season, while his teammate Lance Stroll suffered seven retirements. However, Aston Martin brought extensive upgrades in Hungary and the Netherlands, and the results are beginning to show. Alonso's only point before the summer break came at the Monaco Grand Prix, and even that was aided by penalties for other drivers. Now, at the demanding Zandvoort circuit, the 45-year-old managed to score two points with a P9 finish.
Fans quickly flooded social media with reactions. "Honorary Dutch citizenship for Alonso," wrote one Reddit user. "As soon as he is given even a slightly competent car, he delivers," added another. Even more pointedly, one fan posted: "P18 to P9 on pure pace (and Verstappen crashing out), finally the AM is something resembling a real car."
The biggest praise came from those who labeled Alonso as the GOAT. "Actual GOAT," one fan wrote. Another joked, "You can't spell Fernando Alonso without G.O.A and T." Further comments included: "He had half a chance of getting 1 point, so he got 2," and "Alonso is just a machine. Imagine him in a Macca or a Merc. Absolutely insane! I hope he stays for 2 more years and Newey-Honda get their s**t together and give a championship-winning car."
This result is a breath of fresh air for Aston Martin, who are in the midst of rebuilding. With the added two points, Alonso now has three points in total and moves up to 19th in the standings, level with Esteban Ocon. Meanwhile, Lance Stroll, Yuki Tsunoda, Valtteri Bottas, and Sergio Perez remain on zero points. Will this positive trend continue in the upcoming races? We'll have to wait and see.
