Outgoing Yamaha Alex Rins has expressed a unique regret regarding the radical format shake-up announced for the 2027 MotoGP season. Ahead of the Indonesian Grand Prix last week, series organizers revealed a completely restructured weekend schedule designed to incorporate a sprint qualifying session and modernize the premier class racing ecosystem.

The upcoming format introduces 75 minutes of practice across two sessions on Friday, immediately followed by a 15-minute group qualifying session to determine the sprint grid. This sweeping update aims to condense the action and elevate the competitive intensity from the opening day of track activity, shifting how teams approach setup windows.

On Saturday, the entire grid will participate in Q1, with the fastest 12 riders advancing to contest Q2 for Sunday's main race grid positions. Crucially, Sunday's traditional 10-minute warm-up session has been completely axed, marking the ultimate demise of a practice window that Alex Rins has openly criticized throughout his extensive grand prix career in Moto3, Moto2, and MotoGP.

Reflecting on the timing of the regulatory overhaul, Rins admitted a lingering frustration. "The unique regret that I have is that almost since I joined the MotoGP World Championship in 2012, in 2013 I was complaining to my team, 'Ah, warm-up, warm-up, it’s for nothing'. And every year it was even more demanding, every year in Moto2, Moto3, MotoGP," Rins explained in Indonesia. He added that subjecting the body to extra stress for a brief morning session served little technical purpose.

Despite regretting that the change arrives just as he departs the championship, Rins maintains a constructive outlook on the new structure, drawing comparisons to Formula 1's sprint weekends. He noted that veterans like Marc Marquez and the rest of the grid will face fascinating strategic adjustments under the revised timetable.
