Alex Rins Discusses New MotoGP Format and Criticizes Warm-Up

Yamaha rider Alex Rins has shared his candid perspective on the upcoming format changes being prepared by MotoGP for Grand Prix weekends. Having competed in the World Championship since 2012, the Spanish rider does not view the structural changes as entirely negative, though he remains critical of one specific session that has failed to convince him for years: the morning warm-up.

In a conversation with collaborator Manuel Pecino on Motosan.es, Alex Rins admitted that he once seriously considered skipping the session altogether during his premier class career because he felt it lacked any practical utility. “In MotoGP, one time I remember I came close to not doing the warm-up because it’s useless. You put your body under more stress for 10 or 20 minutes for nothing,” explained Alex Rins.

Despite the significant overhaul to the schedule, Alex Rins believes that evolution is necessary for the championship, drawing comparisons to elite motorsport categories like Formula 1. He even joked about how the series might continue to introduce further qualifying phases in the future. “Changes are always significant. They have good and bad things. But yes, it’s similar to Formula 1, right? They do Q1, Q2,” he noted, before humorously adding, “Let’s see, maybe in two years they’ll have Q3. I was thinking about that. For me it’s not bad.”

Beyond the elimination of the warm-up, Alex Rins highlighted that the real challenge lies in how veteran riders will adapt their longstanding routines to the new weekend structure. Meanwhile, he continues to navigate technical hurdles aboard the Yamaha YZR-M1, particularly regarding the ongoing difficulties the Japanese manufacturer faces in generating proper temperature into the medium compound tires.

As he awaits final decisions regarding his future and contract status in the coming months, Alex Rins remains focused on providing valuable feedback to Yamaha while embracing the shifting landscape of modern Grand Prix racing.
