Good news from Barcelona. Aleix Espargaro has successfully undergone a second surgery to remove the plates and screws inserted in his back after a heavy crash at Sepang last April. The Honda test rider is now in recovery and targeting a return to the track in September.
The crash happened during a private test session at Sepang. Espargaro suffered four fractured vertebrae and several bruises. After the first operation and a long recovery period in Spain, the 37-year-old can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the second surgery went smoothly. Honda has appointed Takaaki Nakagami as a temporary replacement while the veteran is sidelined.
Through a social media post, Espargaro shared the good news with fans. “Pit stop for surgery, to remove the plates and screws that were inserted into my back four months ago. A record recovery, and now the countdown begins to get back on the Honda in September. I can't wait to race again! You've been so patient, Laura. As always, none of this would be possible without you,” he wrote, referring to his wife.
Espargaro's return is a breath of fresh air for Honda. Although only a test rider, his experience is invaluable for bike development. His presence in the garage also puts positive pressure on Nakagami, who has been less convincing in the first half of the season. If all goes according to plan, the MotoGP paddock will once again witness Espargaro's characteristic aggressive and calculated style.
The busy MotoGP calendar after the summer break will be a real test for Espargaro's physical fitness. However, seeing his strong determination, it is not impossible that he will be competitive immediately. Fans certainly hope his recovery goes smoothly and he can soon return to the environment he loves most: the race track.
