Pedro Acosta has taken full responsibility for the crash that cost him a certain victory in the Austrian MotoGP sprint race on Saturday. The KTM rider was leading comfortably when he crashed at the Turn 2/2A chicane with three laps remaining.
The incident occurred when Acosta entered the corner too fast and missed his braking point. He explained that he was checking information on his dash, which caused the error. "I was checking the laps remaining on the dash to see my fuel situation. I f***ed it up, that's it," he said.
Acosta added that trying to manage his lead conservatively was a contributing factor. "At that moment I rolled off a bit to not take any risks... I lost focus because of that. Tomorrow, if I'm in the same position, I will not roll off."
Despite the disappointment, the 22-year-old insisted he will not change his approach for Sunday's grand prix. "Zero. I have nothing to lose. I'm showing more speed and more consistent results. So tomorrow, the same approach."
Acosta is still chasing his first premier class win before leaving KTM for the Ducati factory team at the end of the season. KTM's home race ended in bitter disappointment, and this crash is a major setback in their campaign.
With this result, Acosta missed a golden opportunity to claim his first sprint victory. He must now regroup, while his rivals continue to score crucial points in the championship battle.
