Pedro Acosta admitted that a simple loss of focus cost him a certain Austrian Grand Prix MotoGP sprint victory. The KTM rider dominated practice, then surged from third to first on the opening lap as both Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez made errors.
Acosta was over two seconds clear of the recovering Martin with three laps to go when he crashed at the chicane. "I was checking the laps remaining on the dash to see how I was with fuelling and I f***ed it up. I lost my braking point," he explained.
The young Spaniard acknowledged the pain of the moment. "Three laps to go, three seconds ahead, and it was also the moment I rolled off a bit to not take risks, but that's when I lost focus. Tomorrow, if I'm in the same place, I will not roll off," he stated.
The incident occurred when Acosta ran into the run-off area at the chicane and then fell when his KTM touched the gravel. Asked if he could have saved it, he replied, "No, I was that fast that it was even going to be tough to cut the corner."
Acosta remounted and continued in 13th initially before retiring a lap later. "I was out of the points, I was slow, I had to warm up the tyres again. It was not necessary to take any risks," he told The Race.
He was unsure if his domination before the crash reflected the KTM's pace or his rivals focusing on each other. "I was surprised I was really fast at the beginning, that normally is where I struggle the most. They were having their own fight," he added.
Acosta said the sprint error would make "zero" difference to his approach for Sunday's grand prix, where he will again start third alongside Martin and Marquez. "I have nothing to lose. It's the moment I'm showing more speed and more consistent results," he concluded.
