NASCAR has officially released the 2027 schedules for the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. One of the biggest changes is the return of road courses to the Chase, which was previously devoid of any non-oval tracks. Watkins Glen, which ran in May this year, will move to September and become part of the 10-race championship run.
This decision clearly has major implications for Shane van Gisbergen (SVG). The New Zealander won at Watkins Glen this season, a result that has been key in his quest to make the Chase. With the track back in the Chase calendar, SVG's chances of performing consistently in the crucial round have increased.
The 2027 regular season will feature three road course races: Circuit of the Americas, Sonoma, and San Diego. According to NASCAR Cup Series Managing Director Brad Moran, the presence of many road courses in the regular season makes adding a road course to the Chase a fitting move. “Fifteen years ago or so, you'd bring the ringers in and they'd run up front. That really doesn't happen much nowadays—other than we've got SVG, who's just a worldwide star,” Moran said.
Another notable change is the return of the preseason Clash to Daytona International Speedway for the first time since 2020. After moving to the road course in 2021, then to LA Memorial Coliseum (2022–2024), and Bowman Gray Stadium (2025–2026), NASCAR has now decided to go back to the original track. Speed week will begin on Sunday, February 14 (AEDT) with the Clash.
The NASCAR All-Star Race is also shifting significantly. From Dover, it moves to North Wilkesboro on May 24, while Dover will return as a points race a week earlier, on May 17. Additionally, NASCAR confirmed the second running of the Coronado Naval Base race in San Diego on August 2.
In the Chase, Richmond Raceway moves from a regular season slot to the first race of the 10-race run on September 12, replacing Darlington Raceway, which becomes the regular season finale on September 6. Daytona's second date also shifts: originally the regular season finale in 2026, it now becomes the penultimate race on August 29. New Hampshire Motor Speedway also joins the Chase on September 27, while Homestead-Miami remains the championship finale venue.
With a more balanced calendar between ovals and road courses, NASCAR seems intent on keeping the competition tight until the end. For SVG, this decision could be a blessing—or added pressure, as expectations for him on road courses will be even higher.
