Daniel Holgado made an immediate statement at Silverstone, topping Moto2 Practice with a new lap record of 2m 01.815s to secure direct passage to Q2 for the British Grand Prix.
The drama unfolded in the closing minutes. Senna Agius had briefly held the new benchmark, becoming the first rider to dip below the 2m 02s mark. But Holgado, who had slipped to fourth, responded with a stunning lap to snatch top spot back.
Agius had to settle for second, just 0.095s adrift of his compatriot. Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez took third, unable to improve on his final run.
The surprise of the session came from Alex Escrig, who was the best of the non-Kalex riders in fourth for Klint Forward Racing, just 0.462s off the new record. Izan Guevara was the top Boscoscuro runner in fifth.
Behind the leading pack, Barry Baltus climbed from 15th to sixth late on, while Celestino Vietti recovered from 16th to ninth in the final three minutes. Ivan Ortola, winner and polesitter in Germany, remained inside the top ten despite a crash at Stowe.
Tony Arbolino was the unlucky rider to miss out on Q2, finishing 15th and just 0.037s adrift of the final qualifying spot. David Alonso also struggled, ending the day 22nd after a fall earlier in the session.
